Patient Stories – A patient with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
“I am very grateful to the consultant for suggesting I see a dietitian.”
I have had bouts of IBS since 2008. In the summer of 2009 I experienced some worrying abdominal pains. Through my GP I had a range of blood tests which were all fine though the discomfort continued.
I saw a gastroenterologist at X hospital in July last year where I had a virtual colonoscopy as well as a rigid sigmoidoscopy both of which were clear. I had a first consultation with a consultant in November who suggested I might benefit from seeing a dietitian so he referred me.
I now drink only decaffeinated tea and coffee and am more conscious of what I eat and drink and when. I found the IBS and diet information sheet very informative and to the point. The most significant change has been an introduction of seeds into my daily diet. I now eat golden linseeds everyday usually added to cereals at breakfast but often to other meals as well.
In addition I often eat pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds sometimes on their own but again often added to other foods.
I am very grateful to the consultant for suggesting I see a dietitian. I am very pleased with the advice I have received. I have not felt the need to use any medication since February.
