Trust a Dietitian… Online
It is often said that we all have an online version of ourselves. Indeed, online and in social media is a hotbed for people to reinvent themselves into anything they want to. This is especially true when it comes to food and nutrition ‘experts’, ‘researchers’, ‘gurus’, and…, well the list of descriptives is almost endless. Also, the title ‘dietitian’ (and even ‘dietician’) is protected in law in the UK and only those with the appropriate qualifications and have registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) are allowed to use ‘dietitian’ as a descriptive of who they are and what they do.
In short, when dealing with a ‘dietitian’ you are dealing with the gold standard when it comes to food and nutrition professionals. There is a BDA document that provides information about the difference between a dietitian and other nutrition professionals.
You don’t have to navigate too far online before you come across all sorts of so-called food and nutrition ‘professionals’ populating website, blogs, videos, social media and, so on. Some have sound advice based on evidence and science while others, well, ‘not so much’ is a polite way of putting it. The fact is there are credible food and nutrition commentators out there who are not dietitians riding the web waves however, many of these credible voices are simply lost in a crowd of non-credible shoutings. Our Trust a Dietitian campaign is, as it suggests, a campaign about celebrating and highlighting what dietitians do and what they can offer.
- Online… Dietitians can offer the public credible, sound, evidence-based food and nutrition advice and commentary.
- Online… The public can be assured that all dietitians are registered with the HCPC and they are all governed by codes of conduct that protect the public (the only food and nutrition professions for which this is compulsory).
- Online… Dietitians are the absolute gold standard when it comes to food and nutrition professionals.
With this in mind Trust a Dietitian wants to take this message online. When you see a dietitian online you can be assured of everything we have talked about. Many BDA members are already blazing a path online achieving amazing success and awareness to key food and nutrition messages. Not only are they achieving this success for themselves, they are doing it for the wider profession and helping to build the brand and reputation of dietitians.
To get an idea of who is doing this online, just take a look at the various online channels below and see which dietitians are flying the flag for the profession online.
We want to showcase even more dietitians online, so please take a few minutes to recreate you personal versions of the picture captured in the online channels below and send them to [email protected]. It’s also a free plug for you!
